Air Force Increases SBIRS Budget To Get Sats Off Ground In 2009
The U.S. Air Force Space Systems budget increased by about 5 percent for fiscal year 2009, from $11.3 billion in FY08 to $11.9 billion this year. The program that will receive the biggest bump from this increase is the Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS), geosynchronous satellites that detect heat generated by ballistic missiles before they reach their destination, which had its procurement budget increased by 350 percent, from $399.2 million in FY08 to $1.8 billion this year. ...
